Olympic Gold-medalist Chioma Ajunwa-Opara fears for Nigeria ahead of Tokyo 2020

Atlanta 1996 gold medalist, Chioma Ajunwa-Opara has revealed that she remains scared the country will end up not winning any medal in track and field as the government is not interested in athletes preparing for the tournament.

Nigeria could only manage a bronze medal for all her best efforts at the last Olympics in Brazil, which was won by the men’s soccer team, the Dream Team.
Speaking with www.brila.net, Chioma Ajunwa-Opara also added that preparation in itself is not easy as not every athlete in the country can afford to adequately prepare for the games, and as such, winning medals would be quite difficult for the country in Tokyo.
“You must work for it because others are working day and night so for any athlete to do well, you have to work hard”.
“It’s not easy and our government is not even interested in our athletes doing well so as to get us medals at the Olympics so that’s the only thing that makes me afraid because not athletes can afford the training of being able to adequately prepare for the Olympic Games”.
” Winning a gold medal at the Olympics is not easy, even for you to win bronze, it’s still not an easy task”.
