Policemen warned against unprofessionalism

Policemen across the country have been warned of the grave implication of some of their individual or collective actions in the course of maintaining law and order.

The warning was given at the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa Ikeja, Thursday, by the Commissioner of police in charge of the Federal Special Anti Robbery Squad, Fiminhan Adeoye, the Commander in charge of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Olatunji Disu, a deputy commissioner of police and a don, Dr. Jide John, during a workshop for RRS officers.

C P Adeoye, while speaking on the topic ” PLAN principle and de-escalation of crisis “, warned policemen that the repercussions of some of their actions may even be visited on the entire police population.

The FSARS chief, while reflecting on the recent police killing in the US warned the police personnel that individual actions like that can set the country on fire and portray the police in a bad light.

CP Adeoye cautioned the policemen against using armed and unarmed forces without considering the: proportionality, legality accountability, and necessity of their actions.

He told the policemen that they must always consider the procedures that are required for the use of arms by any policeman during any operation.

” You must have exhausted all the nonviolence before you can use force and arms and you must know force and arms must cease. Officers, who are always eager to use force, always find themselves in trouble and they also violate the right of other people in the process .”

He also charged the officers that their ” authorized objective for any action or operation must not be different from the stipulation of Section 4 of the Police Act.

” I want you to have it at the back of your mind that the lives and rights of the people that you are employed, statutorily empowered, and paid to protect are not violated. It has happened in this country several when the offense of a single policeman is taken by the opinion of most people on all other policemen. Some policemen have lost their lives for offences that they didn’t know anything about.

” It is not possible for us as a police officer not to deploy force but you must bear in mind that, when you are deploying force, it must be strictly in accordance with the law “

RRS Commander, Olatunji Disu highlighted the importance of the training, not just for effective and professionalism among the officers but also to keep them continually abreast of the Global practice on policing.

Disu a deputy commissioner of police also added that” the training was informed by what is happening globally and one or two extrajudicial killings and to further enlighten our officers on the implication of their action.

Dr. Jide Johnson, a senior lecturer at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism also enjoined the policemen to set their actions right during operation, noting that their action will say a lot on a lot of things, that may even be beyond them.
