President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the D’Tigress following their hard-earned Afrobasket final victory against the host Senegal on Sunday.
In his congratulatory message to the African Champions, President BUHARI said:
“Congratulations, @DtigressNG. African champions again!” the President tweeted moments after the triumph.
“You have risen to the occasion, and conquered the continent one more time. We are very proud of what you have
accomplished. “The entire country rejoices with you!
Nigeria successfully defended the title they won in 2017 and made it the fourth title overall.
With the home crowd cheering Senegal inside a 20,000-capacity arena, it was a disappointing defeat for the hosts as Nigeria comfortably led first, second and third round The first, second and third quarters were won by Nigeria (10-14, 14-18, 13-16) but it was a nervy fourth as Senegal bounced back with an 18-12 win, which was however not enough for gold.
Nigeria, who have also qualified for the 2020 Olympics qualifiers, become the second team after Angola to have
successfully defended the AfroBasket title.
The tournament’s Most Valuable Player award was given to Nigeria’s Ezinne Kalu
