Quique Sanchez Flores the No.1 target to take over as Spain coach

Former Espanyol coach Quique Sanchez Flores is the first choice to take over as Spain coach after La Roja’s failure to get past the last 16 at the World Cup this summer.

Spain were eliminated by hosts Russia, knocked out on penalties after a 1-1 draw following 30 minutes of extra time.

Sanchez Flores, currently out of work, was contacted by the RFEF when Julen Lopetegui was sacked and before Fernando Hierro took over for the World Cup.

Despite the contact with Sanchez Flores, RFEF chief finally opted to give the job to Hierro for the duration of the World Cup, with Spain’s first game just two days away at the time.

Sanchez Flores has the profile the RFEF want. He has experience and is a coach capable of adapting to the reforms currently needed with the national team.

He does not have a contract with any club and is ready to take over immediately — and he has always shown a desire to one day coach his country.

With Spain now looking for a permanent coach, this could be his moment.
