Rohr invites Benfica defender for Ukraine friendly, he’s been away for over 400 days

Tyronne Ebuehi’s road back from injury has been long and tedious, so has been his wait for a Super Eagles recall, which came on Wednesday.

Nigeria’s Head Coach Gernot Rohr extended invitations to the Ebuehi, Semi Ajayi, Kelechi Iheanacho and 20 others for an international friendly match against Ukraine next month.

It will be 444 days by September 9, 2019 since Ebuehi played for Nigeria, if he suits up against Ukraine in the friendly. The defender’s last appearance for Nigeria was at the 2018 FIFA World Cup against Iceland.

Ajayi and Iheanacho were dropped from Nigeria’s team to the 2019 AFCON in Egypt on merit, Rohr had argued at the time.

Since then, the duo have been in fine forms for their teams in pre-season and the early days of the new football league season in England – for Ajayi.

Also, their return does not come as a surprise following the international retirement of Mikel Obi and Odion Ighalo.

Meanwhile, Rohr has opted not to invite Eagles first choice goalkeeper, in Egypt, Daniel Akpeyi.

The 33 year-old who is back with Kaizer Chiefs was between the sticks at the weekend in his side’s 1-0 win over Black Leopards.

In his place, the German coach handed a debut call up to 19 year-old Maduka Okoye, who plays for German fourth-tier side Dusseldorf.
