Defender Onome Ebi has admitted that other countries are gradually closing the gap on Super Falcons and warned that the team’s reign could be over very soon.
Despite winning the 2018 African Women’s Championship in Ghana, the Super Falcons suffered a defeat in the hand of Bayana Bayana of South and struggled to retain the title.
The team‘s hope of qualifying for the Olympics games for the first time since 2004 was also dashed after they were eliminated by beaten by Cote D’Ivore in the qualifiers over the two legs.
While speaking to Brila FM in live Instagram session on the team‘s recent struggle against African oppositions, Ebi who holds the record for most world cup appearances by any African ( five), believes other teams catching up with the nine-time African champions and insisted that if something is not done, Nigeria could lose its place on top of African summit sooner.
“As we all know, no team is unbeatable these days, it’s not like before when we beat countries 7-0, it’s really difficult to beat team 2-0 lately.”
“If we really want to keep our place as best as the best in Africa, we really have to work for it. We have to keep training and playing friendly games to keep that standard.”
“Nobody is sleeping, every team is training hard, everybody want to beat Nigeria and be the best in Africa and if we are not ready, someone else will take the title from us,” she said.
The Super Falcons are currently without a coach after Thomas Dennerby dumped the team shortly after the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
The Swede who now the chief coach of Indian U17 women’s national team left his position after unresolved differences with the Nigeria Football Federation.
