Taiwo Awoniyi joined Liverpool in 2015 and has been on loan since then. Currently on his second stint at Mouscron on loan, he is at the fifth club in 4 years.
Taiwo joined Royal Excel Mouscron from Gent after in January 2019 and has gone on to make 7 appearances scoring 6 goals and owes his rejuvenation to God.
The move to Mouscron from Gent was special for more than one reason for Taiwo Awoniyi. The Nigerian striker had joined Gent early in the 2018/19 season to take a step to regular football, but it was not used properly. The attacker now breathes form and confidence scoring four consecutive goals and has only failed to score just once in 7 appearances with Mouscron.
The 21-year-old Nigerian striker has said his relationship with religion is from birth “My father attended a church where there is a hospital. When my mother was ready to give birth, he brought her to this church. That’s how I was born … For me and my family, religion is above all else…”
On February 28, 2019, The Royal Belgian Football Association disciplinary committee issued a stern warning to Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi who was in danger of suspension for showing off a Bible verse while celebrating a goal. Though Awoniyi has reiterated that he meant no religious provocation with his celebration.
Taiwo Awoniyi said after doing everything he could to succeed in Gent, he is now focused on his resurgence “my goal is to accumulate playing time to continue my development. In-form Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi was named in the latest Team of the Week in the Belgian Jupiler league on Monday, the sixth week in a row that he has been named in the Team of the Week.
Taiwo Awoniyi was not selected for Nigeria’s games against Seychelles and Egypt later this month. Awoniyi is expected to return to action when his side takes on St. Truiden on Sunday, March 10th.
