Taribo backs Rohr’s preferred CB partnership of Balogun, Ekong

Anyone hoping that Gernot Rohr would shuffle his pack ahead of Nigeria’s final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles was left bitterly disappointed when the Super Eagles coach unveiled his 23-man squad on Monday.

Speaking on the list of invited players, former Super Eagles defender, Pastor Taribo West has hailed the center back partnership between William Troost Ekong and Leon Balogun, stating that the two players have been doing well for the national team, and wants to see that continue.

The two players were part of the 23 called for the dead rubber AFCON qualifier against Seychelles as well as the international friendly against Egypt, and speaking to www.brila.net, the former Inter and AC Milan defender said he wants to see their consistency for the next 10 years.

“The chemistry of the Oyinbo wall is beginning to work little by little, Leon Balogun was outstanding I the qualifying series and Ekong is doing well in the team also”.

“I want them to keep that consistency, football is not what you play today and then tomorrow, it’s all over”

“From now till the next 10 years, I want to see how they can be consistent,” he concluded.

The showdown against the minnows later this month may be a dead rubber, but it represented a valuable opportunity for Rohr to mix things up ahead of this summer’s continental showpiece.

The central defence combination which Nigerians call “Oyibo Wall” has earned praises and West gave his assessment of the duo and says he hopes they continue to progress as a unit for the good of the team.
