Taribo West backs Mikel to continue in Number 10 role against Guinea

Former Super Eagles defender Taribo West has called on the coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr to ensure that John Obi Mikel continues in the number 10 role of the Eagles, despite criticism from most Nigerians concerning his performance against Burundi.

After the match, many soccer fans stated that playing Mikel Obi in the number 10 position reduced his contributions in the game and further curtailed the fluidity of the midfielders and the final third.

Others believed that Mikel got too tired and had to give way to Alex Iwobi to play the free role which brought life to the midfield with great efforts from Ahmed Musa, who replaced Mikel.

Speaking with www.Cornerstonenewsng.comahead of tomorrow’s second match against Guinea, the former AC Milan and Inter Milan defender stated that he should still play that position, while calling on Rohr to give Mikel some pep talk before the match to encourage him, as that may just be what the former Middlesbrough of England player needs to up his game.

“Ahead of the next match against Guinea, I think that number 10 position should be given to Mikel. Most of the time, he was creative in the game.

“I also believe that the coach also should help to give him much pep talk to encourage him. Sometimes coaches could give you a pro talk to encourage you and that could really go a long way to bring about an excellent performance”.
