D’Tigers Captain Diogu: We Have Learnt Lessons From Gold Coast Failure

By Bamidele Boluwaji:

Following Nigeria’s men’s basketball team D’Tigers poor performance at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, captain of the team Ike Diogu has said they have all learnt from the competition.

The Nigerians lost their first game to New Zealand, second to Canada and final group game to Australia.

The life line given to the team to also have the opportunity to feature in the semi-finals was also bungled as they lost to Scotland to end their participation in the 2018 edition of the Commonwealth Games.

“It was a tough tournament for everyone on the team, losing all the games was not expected but we have seen a lot and also learnt from that,” the D’Tigers captain told the media in Australia.

“The guys were not happy because we knew the expectation back home and I can only say we learnt from that and will do better in future.”

Diogu however said his focus now is how to help Nigeria qualify for the World Cup.

“We had a great tournament in Mali, I mean the FIBA World Cup qualifiers, and we are hoping to continue from where we stopped by ensuring we qualify for the tournament,” he added.

Nigeria topped their group in Mali during the first phase of the World Cup qualifiers and the players are expected to be called to camp next month for the second phase of the African qualifiers.
