AFCON 2019 ticket is Tanzania’s biggest achievement in 39 years – Ogot

Tanzania Guardian sports editor, Fred Ogot has described the Taifa Stars of Tanzania’s 2019 AFCON qualification as the biggest achievement recorded by the nation in football in over three decades.

Speaking to brila.net, Ogot noted that it had been years of agony for Tanzanians watching other African nations play at the Cup of Nations and the Taifa Stars’ qualification for the 2019 edition to be held in Egypt remains a very huge feat.
“The joy is that we have qualified for the AFCON and we will watch our team play at the tournament.
We have endured the pain of just watching other teams play and irrespective of what happens at the tournament, the fact that the team qualified to be amongst the best 24 teams is just good”, he added.
Fred Ogot also stressed that Amunike proved to be a coach who knows what he wants and sticks to his game plan.
“Coach Amunike is a very disciplined coach and we have come to respect him more here in Tanzania. He chose the players he knew would get him the ticket and even when he was criticized, he simply stuck to his guns”, he disclosed.
Former Nigeria international, Emmanuel Amunike had been earlier criticized by a section of the Tanzanian sports media for dropping some big-name players and refusing to select some players from the big teams in Tanzania.
Tanzania eventually secured an AFCON 2019 ticket on the final day of qualifying matches with a 3-0 win against Uganda.
Tanzania booked a ticket to the AFCON 2019 finishing second in the group behind Uganda after a convincing 3-0 win in the final qualification match.
