Aruna to face world number one Fan Zhendong in ITTF World Championships

Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri defeated Iran’s Nima Alamian 4-3 in the second round of the men’s singles ITTF World Championships.

Aruna is the only African left in the competition as Egypt’s Omar Assar exited the tournament following his 3-4 loss to Portugal’s Joao Geraldo in the first round.

Assar’s compatriot Dina Meshref was also thrown out of the tournament in the second round, after losing 3-4 to Canada’s Mo Zhang.

African number one, Aruna fought back from a set down to beat the Iranian 9-11, 12-10, 13-11, 8-11, 11-5 on a day he advanced to the second round.

On Wednesday, Quadri will face the biggest task in Budapest as he is expected to face world number one – China’s Fan Zhendong in the third round match of the men’s singles.
