Attack on DCP: DIG visits Bayelsa

Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Fredrick Lakanu, acting on the directives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has visited Bayelsa State to carry out on-the-spot assessment of the circumstances surrounding the assault on a Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kola Okunola, in Brass Island during the collation of the Nembe/Brass Federal Constituency election results.
Lakanu, while addressing senior officers at the Bayelsa State Police Command, condemned the act in its entirety and in line with the instructions of the IGP ordered the identification, arrest and prosecution of all those connected with the assault, their proxies and sponsors.

The DIG stated that the IGP was miffed by the ugly incident but appreciated the conduct displayed by the officers in the face of obvious provocation.
He also ordered reinforcement of officers to flashpoints in the state to forestall any break down of law and order and urged members of the public to be law-abiding and not be tempted to take the law into their hands.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has provided insight into the incident in Brass, accusing DCP Okunola of “performing extra-police duties and issuing illegal orders.”

The publicity secretary of the party, Doifie Buokoribo, in a press statement, explained that chieftains of the PDP stormed the collation centre and tried to intimidate INEC officials to stop collation halfway and when that did not work, they threatened to beat them up.
He said voters in Nembe Federal Constituency, acting in defence of their democratic rights, insisted that Okunola had no right in line with the Electoral Act to order the relocation of the collation from the federal constituency headquarters in Twon Brass to Yenagoa.

“In Bassambiri-Nembe, the PDP wanted to use their usual commando-style of politics to compromise the elections but they failed lamentably. Voting took place in all the seven wards. Results were collated, and the APC did very well there. No political party or politician will seek to perpetrate violence in its stronghold or area where it is winning,” he said.
Buokoribo called on security agencies to hold the PDP-led state government responsible if there is any breakdown of law and order.
