Carl Ikeme wants Wolves Goalkeeper Rui Patricio to take his ‘retired’ No 1 Jersey

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has urged Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patricio to take his number at the club.

Having spent 16 years at Wolves after coming through the club’s academy, Carl Ikeme was forced to retire from the game in 2018 after being diagnosed with leukemia.

 

Wolves’ keepers Rui Patricio and John Ruddy have since opted against taking the No.1 shirt out of for the former Nigeria international.

 

However Ikeme, who says he appreciates their support and insists he’s not against wearing No.1.

 

“I hope Rui takes it to be honest,” he said.

 

“It was a nice touch from Rui and John, not to take the shirt.

 

“The way John handled it at the time was incredible, and the way Rui has handled it since coming in has been lovely and touching.

 

“But Rui, just take the shirt please, mate.” He said.

 

Ikeme spent his entire career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, making 207 appearances across all competitions. He was part of their teams that won the Championship in 2009 and League One in 2014, and he made one Premier League appearance in 2012.
