Civil Society Organization Commends NCC Chief, Dr. Aminu Maida, For Advancing Telecom Sector Reforms

In a commendation of notable proportions, Citizens Watch Africa (CWA), a civil society organization, has hailed the remarkable performance of Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), for his steadfast dedication to advancing the telecommunications sector since assuming office.

During a press conference held on Tuesday, the group expressed admiration for Dr. Maida’s introduction of commendable reforms that have significantly bolstered stakeholders’ confidence in the sector, thereby attracting increased investments in critical telecom infrastructure.

Hon. Pastor Dave Ogbole, the convener of the group, emphasized that the endorsement followed a comprehensive assessment of the NCC’s operations over the past six months. Ogbole highlighted a renewed commitment to fostering transparency and accountability under Dr. Maida’s leadership, leading to enhanced governance processes within the organization.

“The disposition by the NCC’s leadership to ensure a level playing field for all sector players is commendable,” Ogbole stated.

Furthermore, Ogbole emphasized the positive impact of the NCC’s recent initiatives on productivity and stakeholder engagement, noting a tangible increase in active voice and internet subscriptions, alongside a decline in teledensity.

“It is instructive to note that the nation’s teledensity dropped from 115.63% to 102.30% in September, while broadband penetration decreased from 45.47% to 40.85% in the same month. However, active voice subscriptions witnessed a marginal growth from 220,715,961 to 221,769,883 as of September 2023. Internet subscriptions also experienced a slight increase from 159,034,717 in August 2023 to 160,171,125 in September 2023,” Ogbole explained.

Citizens Watch Africa underscored Dr. Maida’s proactive leadership and visionary policies, which have revitalized the telecoms industry for optimal productivity. The group urged Dr. Maida to sustain this momentum, emphasizing the critical role of excellent leadership in ensuring the sustainable growth and development of Nigeria’s communication sector.

The accolades from Citizens Watch Africa affirm Dr. Maida’s pivotal role in steering the NCC towards greater efficiency and effectiveness, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape.
