A former aide to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, Friday Eluro, has been remanded in prison custody after he was arraigned at an Ashaka Magistrate Court over alleged abduction, torture and assault on a woman.
Acting Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, ASP Chuks Orisewezie, who made this known in a statement in Asaba, the state capital, said the accused was arraigned along with two others.


Orisewezie said operatives had on February 7, tracked the suspect to his compound at Boji-Boji Owa and arrested him with two others, following a trending video where he and others allegedly tortured and assaulted the victim, by stripping her naked.
He said after investigation, Eluro and two others were charged to court “for their despicable act of abduction, torture and dehumanising treatment by stripping a woman naked.


“The volatile nature of his community has informed the reason for applying for assumption of jurisdiction to Ashaka Magistrate Court and he has since been remanded in Kwale prison.”
In a related development, Orisewezie said three suspects, including Uvwiejitobor Akpevwe, Alfred Joseph and David Ukiri, all from Udu in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State have been arraigned at an Asaba Chief Magistrate Court for unlawful possession of firearms.
The accused were arrested at the premises of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Asaba, where electoral materials were kept for the botched elections of February 16.


Oriseweie said the accused persons claimed to be vigilante detailed by their local government chairman to escort the electoral materials after sorting and sharing.
He said their arraignment would serve as a deterrent to would be offenders, “as well as to inform members of the public that the sole responsibility of securing INEC materials, INEC offices/officials, polling units and collation centers rests squarely on the police, in collaboration with other approved security agencies.”


He said the police authority would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute any offender according to the law, even as he assured members of the public of the command’s commitment to security and safety.
