Dolphins will Bounce back for the Title – Ahmedu

Last season’s Playoffs in the Nigeria Women’s Premier Basketball League produced some stunners including the end of First Bank WBC dominance and Coach Peter Ahmedu failing to reach the final for the first time in three years.

Ahmedu joined Dolphins at the end of the 2018 season after leading teh Elephant Girls to a third consecutive league championship.

Dolphins lost in the semi-final, but the team is building for the new season and they want to go for broke.

“We started the season with the screening of players, we’re still on that. Players also went for the holidays and are coming back in,” Ahmedu told brila.net.

“15 players came for the screening and we picked 12. We’ll do further screening and pick from that group to add to our old players for the new season.

“Last season we had a rookie team and lost to MFM in the semi-final by a point. It was heart wrenching because the team; the past season, had defeated MFM three times, so perhaps they underrated the team.”

The Coach insists things have changed with how they will want to approach the new season and a lot of it has to do with the roster and scouting of the opponents.

“I have changed my mindset and approach, I want to rejig the roster and especially drop a few Veterans and add fresh legs. Last season we finished fourth, so this time we want to reach the final and hopefully even take back the title.

“As Coaches have to know how to scout teams, we didn’t much about this last season because the time we had was very short. Some time ago Deepwater stunned the league by assembling veterans; which is similar to what Air Warriors did last season.

“We have to do better understanding teams in the league and that is an aspect of our game that we want to work on.”
