DRIBBLING, A SIN IN FK ENERGETIC SOLONITSIVKA

Dribbling is an act in football that brings excitement to the game. Great players both in time past and present have been known for their dribbling skills.

From the days of Pele, Maradona, Michel Platini, Roberto Baggio, Segun Odegbami, Henry Nwosu, Etim Esin, Austin Jay Jay Okocha to the present set of players like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Isco, dribbling has always been an exciting attributes of these great players.

According to a Nigerian player, Oghenekevwe Hillary-Edjere of Fk Energetik Solonitsivka in Ukraine regional league, dribbling is not an attribute that fascinate the club and if you insist on dribbling, you may be axed from the team entirely.

He further revealed that since football is not an individual sport, but a team’s effort, the club wants to see players move the ball among themselves in tactical and technical formations on the field.

“Everything about football in the Ukrainian regional league is tactical and technical. The players have been taught on the basics of football, which are – ball control, movements, passes, set pieces and shots,” Hilary-Edjere said.

“The club wants to see the ball moves rapidly among the players in swift passes from defence to the midfield and finally to the attack.

“Football here is not about dribbles. It is even an offence to dribble. The club believe that dribbling does not depict teamwork or team spirit.

“Football in Ukraine is all about the team’s effort in handling the ball. Clubs in Ukraine frowns at dribbling and they considered as an offence.

“Most Ukrainian players from their childhood have been taught to play football from the basics of passes, set pieces, markings etc, but no emphasis on dribblings common to Nigerian players.

“And most of the African players have been guilty of dribbling. I thought that it was good to dribble until I came to Ukraine where the club I play for frowns at it and if you insist on dribbling, you are penalised because you are no longer playing within or for the team.

“It may sound somehow especially for a Nigerian player like me, but I had to learn and stick to their rules at the club,” he concluded.
