The goalkeeper trainer in the Nigeria National team, Alloy Agu has confirmed that there is an ongoing search for shot-stoppers that can solidify the position for the Super Eagles.
In a chat with brila.net, Alloy Agu revealed the need for new goalkeepers in order to solidify the goalkeeper position of the Super Eagles as the team currently does not have a substantial number 1.
”Let me explain to you, a lot of things have been said about that department and that department had also lived up to expectations, let me take you from back to the time of Vincent Eyeama, When I took up the job of the Super Eagles team, Enyeama was the fourth goalkeeper of the Eagles’ team. ”
”I brought Enyeama to be the first choice of Super Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent had a record since the inception of the world cup which no one has been able to break up till to date, ”
”When Enyeama left, I brought in Carl Ikeme, Ikeme did so well for Nigeria and the goalkeeping position was solidified, until he fell sick, and I had to bring in the same Daniel Akpeyi, at one time we played against Algeria then at the qualifiers, the same Akpeyi rescued us and we beat the Algerian team that was number one then in Africa.”
”When we played against South Africa and we lost, the situation changed, a lot of things was said about Daniel Akpeyi, but we encouraged him, he is our own and I still worked so hard to bring in Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Ezenwa was in goal against Cameroon and we defeated them, then as Africa champions. ”
”We qualified for the World cup and Ezenwa was doing well, we then brought in Francis Uzoho, and Uzoho solidify the whole place alongside Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi.”
”The problem before the 2019 AFCON was, Francis was not playing and Ezenwa had injuries issues, therefore if you are not playing you can’t be in the same shoes with someone playing week in and week out, ”
”When we got to Asaba, Ezenwa was on top of his game but he sustained an injury which a lot of did not know, and at that point in time Akpeyi was on top of his game and he was doing well when we played against Egypt in a friendly before the nation’s cup in Asaba. ”
”So, Akpeyi played against Burundi, Guinea and he kept all clean sheets, check all the goalkeepers that participated in the just-concluded nations cup, Akpeyi did not commit most of the blunders they committed, ”
”I was still working with Ezenwa and Francis Uzoho, and during the third-place match, Francis Uzoho was ready and we played Francis, he showed he is back in the team, he’s back with everything we know him of, ”
”So, this is the situation – Now, we are working I can tell you categorically that, I have embarked with the scouting team to look within and outside Nigeria to make sure that, that position is solidified.’ the former goalkeeper concluded.
