Ex-Eagles defender Godwin Okpara calls for more friendly games for Eagles

Ahead of the 2021 qualifiers, Ex-Super Eagles defender, Godwin Okpara has said continuation is important for the Nigeria men’s senior national team to excel in future tournaments, though he insists the team has not underperformed.

Nigeria finished third in the 2019 Afcon “Afcon 2019 was not bad, continuation is what we need in the national team, we’ve to blend the players and continue with what we are doing this will make us stronger in the next AFCON.” Godwin Okpara said.

On the Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, he said “The coach did well only few mistake and I believe he has known his mistakes so he can rectify it before then”

Okpara who played in Belgium also stated that there should be open competition in the Super Eagles which is normal even in the clubside “If there is competition it will make the team more stronger and will go far as a team. If a player knows he has a secured shirt he will not work hard, every player has to fight for his jersey which was the style when we were playing back then”

The former Strasbourg defender also pinpointed that the defence is not yet compact and attention should be paid to the defensive department of the Super Eagles “There is still small problem in the defence, there is lack of understanding between our central defenders, If you look deeper you’ll spot the lapse, but I will advice that they get more friendly matches to build understanding between the defenders and the whole team.”
