Gernot Rohr: Defeat To Madagascar Helped Eagles To Stay Humble

Super Eagles Boss Gernot Rohr says his team’s last group game loss to Madagascar can be forgotten after reaching the semi-final of this year’s African Cup of Nations.

After securing maximum points from their first two group games against Burundi and Guinea respectively, the Super Eagles handler made six changes from his usual starters to the team that faced Madagascar in the final Group game.

However, the move backfired , as the three time African championslost 2-0 to the tournament debutants to finish second in the Group.

The 1980, 1994 and 2013 Afcon winners has now bounced back from the set back to record two high profile wins , against the defending champions Cameroon and Bafana Bafana of South Africa on their way to the last four.

Speaking ahead of the semi-final meeting with Algeria on Sunday, Rohr said the defeat to Madagascar helped his talented young side to be modest and focused.

“We could lose it because we had already qualified for the next round.

“We wanted to allow others in the team to play as well.

“We can forget about the defeat to Madagascar now because we are through to the semi-final. Even the defeat helped us to be more humble and sometimes it is good also.”

The Super Eagles will take on Algeria for a place in the final with either Senegal or Tunisia.
