It’s been two years since Anthony Nwakaeme made his Super Eagles debut, in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Algeria, since then he’s been shut out of the team, or so he feels.
In a chat with brila.net, Nwakaeme recalls the feeling although exciting was a bitter-sweet experience.
“In the Eagles I was not welcomed like other players. I was there in two home games but I wasn’t giving a minute,” the 30 year-old said.
His debut ended 1-1, in a dead rubber game that was later awarded to Algeria, after it emerged Nigeria fielded an ineligible player.
It was a debut to forget, the forward a player of Hapoel Be’er Sheva at the time, couldn’t replicate his sterling Club performances in the Ligat Ha’Al for Country.
“My first game wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t my best game, I don’t want to make excuses,” He said.
Nonetheless he isn’t resigned to not getting a recall to the team, with his form for Trabzonspor seeming even more impressive.
So far he has scored 11 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions since joining the Turkish Super Lig club from Israel.
Five times he was invited to the Eagles, but he only got 71 minutes and though he isn’t at all bothered about the snub, there’s a strong desire in his heart to wear the Green and White again.
“I don’t know what happened. If you ask me it’s not fair. But I’m not really bothered, I’m here in my club; If they call me I’ll be happy if they don’t I’ll be fine.
“I’m comfortable playing for my club, but, I will be up with my bags packed if I’m invited to the Eagles.”
