Five years after the Shagamu Prison, Ogun State jailbreak, one of the 20 inmates who escaped, Akeem Akinyemi has been re-arrested by the operatives of the Inspector – General of Police Monitoring Unit.
Akinyemi was rearrested during a raid of notorious hideouts of criminals by the police.
It is now a double problem for Akinyemi as he will be facing a serious penalty for his action.
The Public Relation Officer of the Ogun Command of the Nigerian Prison Service, Victor Oyeleke, confirmed the arrest of the escaped inmate, adding that he would be made to face the music of escaping from prison
Akinyemi after the jailbreak changed his name from Akeem Akinyemi to Akeem Fijabi, yet, he did not stay away from crime as he became a notorious thug in Sagamu
The suspects, who were then remanded in prison for armed robbery, connived with 19 other inmates and perforated the prison wall before they escaped.
The then Comptroller -General of the Nigerian Prison Service, Zakari Ibrahim, during an inspection of the prison confirmed the jailbreak to newsmen and added that four of the escaped inmates were later re-arrested.
It was gathered that Akinyemi, apart from the armed robbery case that took him to prison, has two other cases of attempted murder and escaping from the prison to answer.
A prison official, who pleaded anonymity said that ” he was arrested in 2011 for armed robbery and he joined others to escape. Two years after his escape from prison, he became the leader of a group of thugs, who worked for a land grabber and in 2015 he matched a man, who narrowly escaped death but had his body deformed “.
It was gathered that trouble actually started for him a few days ago when operatives of the IGP Monitoring Unit invaded a community in Sagamu GRA and arrested Akinyemi and six others with dangerous weapons.
He was arraigned in court by the police and he has been remanded in the same prison where he escaped.
