Lobi Stars beat MFM to move to sixth on NPFL Group A

Lobi Stars moved to the sixth position on the log of Nigeria Professional Football League Group A after a narrow 2-1 win over leaders MFM in their rescheduled matchday-three encounter at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi on Wednesday.

Lobi Stars came into the game at the back of their 3-0 CAF Champions League defeat to Mamelodi Sundown in South Africa which has left them on the brink of elimination.

 

Midfielder Dare Ojo put Lobi Stars ahead in the 16th minute with a long-range effort which left MFM’s goalkeeper Olatunji Odekunle who making his premier league bow stranded.

 

MFM fought back to restored parity in the 28th minute through Chijioke Akuneto who tapped home effortlessly Michael Ohanu’s cross to go into the half break with a draw.

 

Former MFM striker  Bashiru Monsuru put Lobi Stars back in front with 20 minutes left on the clock and there was no further goal till after the final whistle.

 

The three-point lifts Lobi Stars out of the relegation zone to sixth on the log with four games in hand, while Fidelis Ilechukwu’ MFM FC maintain their top of the Group with eighteen points from nine matches.

 

Next for Lobi Stars is CAF Champions League clash with ASEC Mimosas in Enugu on Sunday, while MFM takes on Bendel Insurance of Benin at the Soccer Temple in Agege on Sunday.
