Marathoner Callum Hawkins racing to first medals after past misfortunes

Callum Hawkins led the marathon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games by two minutes before he collapsed from exhaustion but he feels he has a point to prove when he steps on the start line at the 2019 London Marathon, which happens to be his first Marathon since collapsing.

“I don’t want to be known as the guy who fell over on a bridge; I want to be known as the guy who wins medals and runs quick times…” he said.

Last year, in temperatures approaching 30C, Hawkins who was leading the Commonwealth Games marathon began to look unsteady on his feet, he fell once, he got back up and continued before a second fall moments later crossing a bridge just over a mile from the finish line ended his race and he was eventually taken to hospital for treatment.

With Tokyo marathon qualification the target, Hawkins having previously come fourth at the World Championships and ninth at the Rio Olympics, and missing out on a first major international medal in Gold Coast, the 26-year-old believes he has learned from his experience in Australia.
