Mikel Obi eyes Chelsea role, wants to become Lampard’s assistant in future

Former Nigerian Captain John Mikel Obi has backed Frank Lampard to be successful in his new role as a Chelsea Manager.

Mikel and Lampard played together at Chelsea between 2006 and 2014 and the pair helped the Blues win EPL, FA, Europa league and the Champions League trophy.

Lampard was appointed as Maurizio Sarri replacement back in June, after impressing in his debut season as a manager of English Championship side Derby County.

Mikel, however, revealed Lampard and John Terry had demonstrated that they have what it takes to manage the club after their playing career but surprised how Lampard has arrived at the top quicker than John Terry.

“I am very happy for Frank. When we were playing at Chelsea, we are expecting that John Terry and he would be very good managers, but we were expecting Terry to reach that level first. But Lampard made a big step,”

“His arrival at Chelsea means the club are caring for their legends. I joked with him after the Chelsea move, I want to be his assistant when I retire.

“I hope he will be successful at Chelsea for many more years. I also want to see John Terry in similar jobs in the future because he was our leader on the pitch.”

Lampard has guided Chelsea to four wins from eight league games and they occupied the fifth position on the log of the Premier league.

Mikel, on his part, has retired from the Super Eagles after the Africa Cup of Nations, currently plies trade in the Turkish Super Lig with Trabzonspor.
