District Governor of Rotary Club District 9110, Lagos, Dr Jide Akerele has said that Nigeria would be declared polio-free this year.

Akerele, who was hosted by Rotary Club of Falomo, noted that the World Health Organisation (WHO) was concluding the paper works prelude to the declaration of the country a polio-free nation.

According to him, “We have not had a case of polio in the last three years. The last case was August 22, 2016. On August 22, 2019, if we don’t record any case of polio, the WHO would declare Nigeria polio-free. We are expecting the certificate declaring Nigeria polio-free in October”.

The Rotary Club of Falomo, District 9110, hosted Dr Akerele, to a breakfast meeting where the club’s president, Mrs Julie Nkanga, disclosed that the club was poised at ensuring that rural dwellers get quality healthcare.

The district governor, who was impressed by the club’s performance, urged members to up their ante in humanitarian activities.

According to Akerele, “what motivated me to join Rotary club , was the will to do more good for people, because ,as a human being, there is a limit to what you can do alone, but when you work with other people, you will be able to do so much more than what you couldn’t do as a person. There is joy when you impact on someone.

“We are addressing extreme poverty in a holistic manner. Rotary plans to have a programme that would tackle extreme poverty like it has been done in India and Bangladesh. We are planning vocational training where they will be equipped with skills and during such training; we would give them stipends to sustain them during the training. We would open a bank account for them so that any help we offer them can be channeled through the account. We would also give them a phone to monitor them to see their development.

“At the end of the training, we will provide them with the tools and kits they need to start up their trade. After that, we would graduate them from extreme poverty to ordinary poverty. The Rotary million dollar challenge would help us raise money to tackle extreme poverty”.
According to the club’s president, Nkanga, “We are glad to host the district governor.  He is here to commission some of the items we are donating Generator and some other hospital equipment to the Langbasa community health center. When we went there for needs assessment some weeks ago, we discovered that patients go through a lot when there is a power outage. We are happy to impact lives.”

Supervisor of Health in the Local Government Area, Hon. Oshodi Wakilu appreciated Rotary club for their community sprinted programs.

His words: “This is a big surprise to us and we are really thankful to Rotary for this gesture aimed at assisting the government in reducing the sufferings of the people.”

The Club in the past had embarked on a massive reading campaign aimed at promoting the efficiency of students in the use of the English language.

The club hosted the graduation of over 50 secondary students who are now certified to be proficient in reading at Government Junior Secondary School in Victoria Island.
