Salah, Mane Score Historic Goals As Liverpool Ease Past Bournemouth

By James Agberebi:

Mohamed Salah made goals history on Saturday as Liverpool closed the gap on Manchester United in the race for second place in the Premier League with a comfortable 3-0 win against Bournemouth at Anfield.

Goals from Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino secured the win for the Merseyside team.

Liverpool remain third on 70 points, just one point behind second-placed Manchester United in the league table.

Bournemouth are eighth on 38 points.

Salah is now the first African player to reach 30 Premier League goals in a single season (Didier Drogba was the previous highest African scorer with 29 in 2009-10).

He is also the third player to score 40 plus goals (in all competitions) in a season for Liverpool after Ian Rush (1984 and 1987) and Roger Hunt (1962).

Also he is the second player to score 40 plus goals (in all competitions) in Europe’s big five leagues this season after Cristiano Ronaldo (41)

Mane is now the highest-scoring Senegalese player in Premier League history with 44 goals.

It did not take long before Liverpool broke the deadlock on eight minutes through Mane who converted a rebound after Asmir Begovic had saved his initial header.

Josh King thought he had equalised for Bournemouth from a corner but he was flagged for offside.

Salah should have doubled Liverpool’s lead on 33 minutes but was denied by Cook with a superb block.

Liverpool had a penalty appeal on 66 minutes after what looked like a foul by Nathan Ake on Salah but nothing was given.

In the 69th minute, Liverpool went 2-0 up thanks to Salah who looped a header over Begovic for his 30th league goal of a remarkable season.

Roberto Firmino should have added a third for Liverpool on 74 minutes only to see his effort cleared off the line.

On 82 minutes Bournmouth almost pulled a goal back through Dan Gosling whose well timed shot was saved by Loris Karius.

And in the 90th minute, Firmino made the points safe as he fired into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.
