Sports Minister Dare talks about Nigeria’s expectations from Gernot Rohr

Sports Minister, Hon. Sunday Dare has highlighted expectations from Super Eagles Head Coach Gernot Rohr following the extension of his contract for another two and a half years.

The minister while speaking in an interview with Brila FM on Tuesday night said he was not averse to the contract extension but insisted that Nigerians must get results.

‘Just as you said, Football is king amongst Sports, so the process of selecting the coach has to be in the global standard,’ Dare told Brila FM.

‘Even before I became Minister, there are processes and procedures that are followed when it comes to bringing on a new national coach or renewing the contract of a coach who is already in the house and I think it was important for us to follow the processes and procedures in place.

‘He had the right of first refusal, that was what the NFF did. It is best practice, it is the global practice but the NFF also had a review of his performance in the last three years, and based on that review, we saw lapses and inserted new conditions that were not there before.

“Some of the conditions bother on the mode of payment, while some are technical issues regarding the development of our football and that to me, is fundamental.”

Since taking over, Rohr has built a team composed of mostly young players and has also worked with the federation to entice players born abroad and representing other countries in age-group football, to switch their international allegiance to Nigeria.

He also turned around Nigeria’s fortunes, qualifying with ease for both the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where his team finished third and he became the first Nigeria coach to use all 23 players in the squad.
