Mainz 05 suffered a meltdown in the final 10 minutes of their opening Bundesliga match on Saturday against Freiburg, and the six minutes cameo handed Taiwo Awoniyi did little to avoid a 3-0 road defeat.
Awoniyi joined Mainz 05 on loan from Liverpool, but the forward’s first appearance in the matchday squad was a bench role in the DFB-Pokal game against Kaiserslautern.
On Saturday, the youngster came off the bench with Die Nullfünfer losing 2-0. Three minutes later the final blow was struck.

Mainz 05 Coach, Sandro Schwarz described the capitulation as “strange”.
“That was a strange game. We had everything under control and wanted to be the ones dictating the play,” Schwarz said after the game.
“Then we lost our structure a little and Freiburg punished us clinically. We will analyse and learn from it.”
