Wayne Rooney reveals how Mourinho forced him out of Manchester United

Three Lions Legend WAYNE ROONEY admits his final season at Manchester United was ‘embarrassing’ as he was frozen out by manager Jose Mourinho.

Rooney made 25 appearances in the Premier League in 2016-17 as he became the club’s all-time record scorer.

But only 15 of those came from the start and he says it was hard to play a bit-part after being a key player for almost all of his 13 years at the club.

United won the League Cup and the Europa League that season but money was named on the bench for both finals.

And he claims it ended up becoming an embarrassment for him.

“I was about to come on against Southampton in the League Cup final, and in those moments it was embarrassing.

“It was getting to a point where I was embarrassed.

“I thought ‘I can’t keep doing this’, as hard as it was to leave United.

“In the Southampton game, Mourinho came to me and said: ‘I want you to lift the trophy.’

“I was like: ‘Well, I didn’t even play in the game.’

“He was persistent with it, and I literally lifted it and moved it on.

“What was I doing? I need to move on and go somewhere else.”

Rooney left Old Trafford at the end of the 2061-17 campaign to return to boyhood club Everton, before joining MLS outfit Washington DC United.

The 33-year-old has turned back the years in America and hit 12 goals in 20 appearances as he helped fire them to the playoffs.

He also made an emotional return to the England squad to win his 120th and final cap in Thursday’s friendly win over the United States at Wembley.
