CAF Confederation Cup: Enyimba wins in Bamako

Enyimba picked their first away points in the CAF Confederation Cup courtesy a 90th minute penalty Farouk Mohammed, but also largely in part to the heroics of goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai.

The NPFL club are now almost guaranteed a spot in the quarter-final, if they win in their final game – at home – against table topping CARA Brazzaville.

Enyimba, who are Nigeria’s only remaining club on the continent this season, have nine points from the five matches played so far in Group C.

For the most part on Sunday at the Stade Modibo Kéïta in Bamako, the two times CAF Champions League winners were second best and created very few chances.

The alertness and experience of Afelokhai though, who was picked ahead of Ghana’s Fatau Dauda, would prove crucial for the visitors.

Afelokhai would make several top saves, including a bold block on 87 minutes to deny the hosts a glorious goal scoring opportunity.

Eventually, Enyimba would be rewarded with a penalty after Sunday Adetunji was hacked down as he ran through on goal.

Mohammed stepped forward and dispatched the ball coolly to score at the death and hand Enyimba their first continental win away from home since March, when they defeated Energie in the play-off.
