Ex-Spain, Real Madrid Keeper Canizares Loses Son To Cancer

Former Spain, Real Madrid and Valencia goalkeeper Santiago Canizares has announced the death of his five-year-old son Santi after a long battle with cancer.

Canizares, 48, made the announcement of his son’s demise on his verified Twitter handle on Friday.

Santi was one of the triplets born to the goalie and his wife Mayte Garcia in 2013. The couple have had four children including Santi, together.

Canizares wrote on Twitter: “My son Santi has died.

“I think it should be me who tells you, in appreciation of all the show of support and affection I have received from you.

“He has passed away surrounded by peace and having understood his mission in this five years he has been with us.”

Canizares who had three children called Carlota, Lucas and Olivia, with his first wife Marina, won the 1998 UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid.

He left Madrid for Valencia in 1998 and helped them win the Laliga title in 2002 and 2004.

He was also in the Spanish squad to the 1994, 1998 and 2006 FIFA World Cups.

Alongside the likes of Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique, Kiko, Canizares helped Spain the gold in the football event of the Barcelona 1992 Olympics.
