Experts urge security agencies to document crime, investigation

Security experts have called on security agencies to put down experiences in books before they retire from offices.

Faces @ the book launch.

The security egg-heads who were speaking during the book launch on “Essentials of public relations for private security officers” written by two crime reporters, Mr. Odita Sunday of the Guardian newspapers, and the publisher of Security Express magazine, Mr. Frank Oshanugor, said documentary on crime scene, investigation, and experience by security agencies, especially the police, would go a long way in providing information that would help those coming up in the ranks to take over from them.

Chairman on the occasion, Mr. Wale Olaoye, CEO of Halogen Security, said, “We all should begin to put down our experiences in books to stand as references to our children and those taking over from us.

I think our problem is that we don’t document our experiences in a book. You can imagine when an investigative police officer or a divisional police officer would document his experience during his tenure and the book is in the archive, whoever is coming after him would not have it difficult to police the terrain as he would just pick the book, go through it, gain experience and improve on it.

I appreciate this step and recommend that documenting ideas that speak to the Nigerian environment in books such as published by the duo is pertinent to empower guards of both public and private institutions in combating security challenges, especially in the face of the dearth of knowledge.

“Documentation of your experiences can bring about progress, begin to write your experiences; generations will learn from them.”

The chief launcher, Mrs. Funke Adesoji, MD/CEO, Remax Realtors, corroborated Olaoye’s advice, saying: “Nigerians should appreciate book documentary for future references. We should encourage our staff to do documentary or publication on their experiences, as it will help in changing the narratives.

We should encourage them morally, financially and with information. We should know that whatever we put down today will be a reference point for our children.”

The book reviewer, Manir Yari, Deputy Comptroller of Immigration, DCI, Ikoyi Passport Office who was ably represented by W. A Suleiman while speaking at the event said the104 paged book brought to the fore good and effective message to security personnel in unambiguous manner yet employed simple language to the admiration of knowledgeable and contemporary readers and to readers whose level of knowledge is below the writers’.

The five chapters’ book presented in a chronological manner was well referenced as it adopted a chapter by chapter method of referencing.

The book in-depth analysis did not go unnoticed by the reviewer as he drew a reference point to the emergence of private security in the country on page 23 of it.

DCI Yari being an author himself recommended to public relations practitioners and managerial staff working at all security level. He, however, critiqued few weaknesses noticed but which on a quick glance of a personal assessment paled into insignificance compared to what was enumerated as its strengths.

Yari added that he x-rayed the book based on the standard yardstick of thematic/objectives, methodology, strengths/weaknesses and conclusion.

Conveying goodwill message from number one security public officer, Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris, Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Olubode Ojajuni said his boss acknowledged the intellectual energy put in the work and directed that many copies should be put in police library.

CP Dan Nkem Okoro, Commissioner of Police, Anti-Fraud Department, FCIID, Alagbon, Lagos, held out commendation for the journalists/authors saying they turned around journalism in the crime world with a midas touch and yet don’t compromise standard and maintain a friendship with police personnel.

He described the work of private security guards as part of security in Nigeria,” as long as they wear a uniform, they carry out the same work and are also building the face of police.

CSP Dolapo Badmos, Zone 2 Police Command, who represented Assistant Inspector -General of Police and Force Public Relations Officer, Force PRO, Jimoh Moshood , said that Nigeria Police Force was happy with the authors for their contribution to the nation and hoped that the book would achieve what the authors actually envision it to do.

The authors promised to write more books as their contribution to the nation building.
