We were unlucky in Madrid — Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is disappointed with how his side bows out of the UEFA Champions League, after putting in a great shift against Real Madrid.

Chelsea’s title defense ended following a 4-5 aggregate defeat against record winners Real Madrid in the quarter-final.

Chelsea lost the first leg 3-1 at home but was on the verge of one of the competition’s greatest turnarounds when leading 3-0 in the second leg.

The Blues led late in normal time until Real Madrid dragged themselves back into the tie. Luka Modrić was the architect, producing a stunning outside-of-the-boot cross for substitute Rodrygo to volley in.

Rodrigo’s goal forced the game into extra time and Chelsea substitute Christian Pulišić spurned two late chances to return the tie back to their favor.

The Los Merengues however punished Chelsea for their missed as Benzema scored another header to put Real Madrid 5-4 up on aggregate and this time, Chelsea couldn’t respond.

Tuchel spoke about being perfect for 90 minutes in this game and the brutal fact is that Chelsea’s individual qualities from some Real Madrid players knocked them out.

“We are very disappointed and very proud at the same time because we played a fantastic match. We deserved what we had – we scored four goals and we had big chances to score even more.”

“We were unlucky, that is why we are disappointed. We got beaten by pure individual qualities.” He said.

With the three-goal scored in Spain against Real Madrid, Chelsea has now scored in their last 11 away matches in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The Blues, also, are the first English team to score three goals at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu since Manchester United in 1968.
