Dramatic DFB Pokal Exit for Sunday Oliseh’s SV Straelen

Sunday Oliseh’s SV Straelen side were knocked out of the DFB Pokal over the weekend in a seven-goal thriller against 10-man St. Pauli.

Straelen’s first round exit from the German Cup competition comes six days after their opening day defeat in the Regionalliga West match up against Schalke II.
On Saturday, before a sizable crowd at the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena, Straelen took the lead in the 19th minute, Jaron Vicario firing them ahead.
However as the first half wore on, they turn over the lead and trailed 2-1, conceding in the 25th and 40th minutes with goals from Eric Smith and Jakov Medic respectively.
Burundi’s Amoros Nshimirimana (42′) leveled before the break to end an enthralling first half.
After the resumption, the 2. Bundesliga side hoped to consolidate on their dominance and it wasn’t until after the hour mark they would get a breakthrough.
Substitute David Otto put St. Pauli ahead in the 62nd minute, but Straelen weren’t and the 22 year-old Curacao midfield star Vicario would get his second goal in the 80th minute.
Meanwhile, three minutes earlier the visitors had been reduced to 10 men after Manolis Saliakas was shown a straight red.
The numerical advantage looked like it would benefit Oliseh’s side and after Vicario’s equalizer they could have gone and caused a Cup upset.
However, it wasn’t to be and St. Pauli would go on to snatch a late winner in the 90th minute, Medic once again at the end of the ball.
Despite the spirited effort, Straelen were eliminated in the round of 32 and are now without a win in two competitive games under their new Manager.
Next up for Sunday Oliseh and his charges is a home game against Kaan-Marienborn in the Regionalliga on Wednesday.
